Android Update Process for Rooted HTC Thunderbolt – OTA 2

· Android

Please read if you want to know how to upgrade your ROOTED HTC Thunderbolt from the first software release to OTA2. You must perform these steps first: http://virtualparadise.wordpress.com/2011/05/11/android-root-process-for-htc-thunderbolt

This article is a compilation of many different articles. I wanted to understand the whole process to ensure nothing bad would happen. I wanted to know what each of the files were for as well as the steps to take to reverse all the changes exactly. I tested this process on two Thunderbolts using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate with Service Pack 1. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you brick your phone. Do your research before performing any of the steps below. It is NOT illegal to root your phone, but it will void your warranty.

If you flash a radio and you no longer get a data connection, check here for previous radio versions:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1045081-p-2.html

You can also use Rom Manager to Flash a Rom:

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/05/08/complete-guide-how-to-flash-a-custom-rom-to-your-android-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/

Again, only perform these steps on a ROOTED Thunderbolt that already has a custom version of the originally ROM.

  1. Add files to device and then set the permissions:

    adb push busybox /data/local/

    adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/busybox

  2. Rename the radio update from mr2_PG05IMG.zip to PG05IMG.zip and upload to sdcard:

    adb push PG05IMG.zip /sdcard/

  3. Open shell as root and verify file is not corrupt (should output 4072b5954bf0032103b62c5ae69cb13e):

    adb shell

    /data/local/busybox md5sum /sdcard/PG05IMG.zip

    exit

  4. Reboot your phone to the boot loader screen:

    adb reboot bootloader

  5. Use the volume up and down buttons to ensure bootloader is selected and then press power once.

  6. When asked to “start update”, click the volume up button for “Yes”. The phone will reboot and then flash. The process will take a while. Don’t turn off the power!

  7. When the screen shows “Update Complete…”, press the Power button to reboot.

You are now upgraded.
